Appliance Selection Tips for the Elderly

The right appliances can help the elderly or aging members of your family!

If you need a new refrigerator, stove or other major appliance, why not buy one that will add convenience to your kitchen as your family ages? Here are some ideas:

  • A 60-year old sees about one-third as well as a 20-year old. Why not treat your eyes to a light-colored stove with contrasting dark, cast-iron elements?
  • Clothes dryers are available with buzzers that sound when it’s time to clean the lint trap. That’s a bonus for folks who have trouble seeing light-colored lint.
  • Side-by-side refrigerators--the kind where the freezer runs the height of the unit--make the freezer easier to get into from a seated position. And the open doors take up less space, so they’re easier to get around if you use a walker or wheelchair.
  • Through-the-door water dispensers on new refrigerators let people help them-selves to water and ice without opening the refrigerator door or pouring from heavy water pitchers.
  • Get instant hot water at the turn of a tap by installing a hot water dispenser on your kitchen sink. The water is hot enough to cook pasta, mix up instant foods or warm a baby’s bottle at the sink--without having to lug a pot of water to and from a range.
  • Most major appliance manufacturers offer ranges and cook tops with controls on the front instead of the back. The controls are easy to reach from a sitting or standing position and eliminate the risk of reaching over a heated burner. These often are special-order items.
  • Microwave ovens with side-swing doors not only put the controls within easy reach, they let cooks position themselves right in front of the oven for easier loading and removal of food. Consider installing yours at waist level instead of over your head.
  • Side-swing dryer doors and front-loading washing machine doors provide plenty of room to reach inside the dryer or washing machine while sitting or standing.
