Washington Youth Tour
Ms. Katherine "Kat" Hunter represented Sumter EMC on the 2011 Washington Youth Tour (WYT) in June. The WYT is an all-expense-paid weeklong trip to our nation's capital. Electric cooperatives across the country sponsor the tour to help students develop their leadership skills and learn the history of the rural electrification program.
The WYT goes well beyond being just a top-notch tour of our nation's capital. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience America's government and history up close. Patrice joined almost 1,500 other tour recipients as they met with state and national leaders, underwent leadership training and made new friends, as well as visited all the major sights. Kat is a junior at Americus-Sumter High School South Campus. Her favorite subject is English, but her favorite teacher is 8th grade Georgia studies teacher, Nathelma Maxwell, because she "made everything fun to learn." For the past 3 years, Kat has earned honor roll recognition for her academic performance. Kat is active in the Americus-Sumter High School Singers show choir; she is also class secretary, a member of the Civinettes and the Beta Club, and she participates on the school's tennis team. Kat's community service includes being active in the Americus-Sumter County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership program. In her spare time, Kat pursues her hobbies of reading, listening to music and playing video games.
Kat plans to pursue a four-year degree in aeronautical engineering from either Georgia Institute of Technology or Howard University.
Kat is the daughter of Sumter EMC member Katherine Nelson; she has two sisters, Krystal Hunter and Tamika Williams. The family attends New Mt. Mariah Baptist Church in Americus.
The Washington Youth Tour is held in June each year. Sumter EMC sponsors one student per year and rotates the sponsorship among the high schools in our service area.
